Description from the publisher:

"Jihad vs. Terrorism" is Dr. Maher Hathout’s profound and timely critique of the current approaches to understanding the Islamic concept of "jihad." This word, in Arabic, literally means, "Struggle." Rather than its popular media connotation of "holy war," Dr. Hathout explains that the true meaning of "jihad" in Islamic traditions is that of an internal spiritual struggle, focused on individual purification and the promotion of social justice and human rights.

In some extreme sectors, this concept has been twisted to justify politically motivated acts of violence under the guise of religiosity. Fueled by the notoriety of certain extremists, American society has come to interpret jihad as the holy passion, which drives young men to seek martyrdom in hopes of gaining heaven.

Contrary to these banal interpretations, the Quran characterizes this struggle as one, which utterly forbids violence against innocent civilians, significantly diminishes the scope of legitimate warfare, and completely abhors the notion of terrorism.

However, such a true understanding of Islam, much needed by both Muslims and non-Muslims, must be based on the teachings of the Quran and the Prophetic traditions, which mandate equality, justice, and peace. In this accurate interpretation, Muslims should practice their religious obligations while also respecting the rights and practices of other religious traditions, and upholding the sanctity of human life.

Dr. Maher Hathout, a retired physician, is a prominent leader of the American Muslim community. He has written numerous articles in Arabic and English. He is the spokesman for the Islamic Center of Southern California, the senior advisor to the Muslim Public Affairs Council as well as the chairman of Multimedia Vera International.
